In recognition of her steadfast commitment to protect, recover and serve sex trafficked children and young adults, American Children’s Campaign and Voices for Florida’s Open Doors Outreach Network recently presented a Victim Advocate Superhero Award to Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody. The American Children’s Campaign Superhero awards are reserved for people who envision and/or lead transformational change for children.

Florida is a hot spot for trafficking, ranking 3rd in the nation for reports of human trafficking. There were 896 reports of human trafficking in Florida to the National Human Trafficking Hotline in 2019, the latest statistics available. Most of the reports (640) were for sex trafficking and 172 reports involved minors.

With the support of the Florida Attorney General’s Office, Voices for Florida launched the Open Doors Outreach Network in 2017 to serve child and young adult victims of sex trafficking. To date, 1,249 victims have been served.

The Superhero Award is not reserved for public officials.  Most recipients have been private citizens or advocates who have envisioned innovations such as children’s health insurance, civil citations, new strategies to intervene in child trafficking, and more. To date, 14 Superhero awards have been distributed in American Children’s Campaign’s 29-year history.

“The common denominator for receiving a Superhero award is the large-scale transformative change that can be achieved,” explained Roy Miller, president of American Children’s Campaign. “It recognizes system reform that fundamentally changes children’s lives for the better.”
