Girl-Centered Practice Institute
An Innovative Applied Learning Opportunity

Girl Centered

Girls have very different pathways than boys into the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. They are more likely to have experienced trauma, have a diagnosed mental health problem or have experienced physical and sexual abuse. As a result, the services designed around issues facing boys often miss the mark for girls.

The First Girl-Centered Practice Training and Certificate Program in the Nation

Voices for Florida partnered with the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center and University of North Florida to identify gaps in educational training opportunities that promoted girl-centered practices and programming. It was and still is the first girl-centered practice training and certification opportunity of its kind in the nation.

Offered at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, the new girl-centered practice courses are an applied learning opportunity that engages participants in the direct application of skills, theories and models that can be used immediately to implement girl-centered practices in girl-serving organizations. The program also encourages participants to be equal partners with girls in the creation and delivery of services to improve their safety and growth. Three certificate options are available: Certificate of Completion, Certification and Certified Girl-Centered Practice Trainer.
